If you don't already have a theme layer, you don't need to edit the theme layer; just your layout layer.

(Usually people porting layouts just need to tweak their layout layers. People using official layouts from here need theme layers in order to apply changes on top of the existing layout)

Anyway, to check if you do have a theme layer, see: http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/advanced/layers

If you don't have one, carry on tweaking your layout :)

Add this to your layout layer:

layerinfo source_viewable="1";

And then give me think to that layer :)
