"Name our Style" challenge and pre-announcement about submitting stylesheets

There were lots of reasons why we worked on overhauling core, some of which I wrote about in my last entry. One of the things that I'm really excited about is that core2 is designed to be completely customizable with CSS. There are classes and IDs for a multitude of options, from making alternating entries different colours, to putting different borders around protected entries. We're still working on documentation, and there's a little bit of finalizing to the HTML that's left, but shortly there will be an announcement with information about how to write and submit your own CSS to be offered as an official stylesheet. We have seen some of the things that members have been producing with the core2 drafts, and we're really excited to see what the community does with the finalized version. Anyone who is familiar with the css Zen Garden knows how much this kind of design can free you to let your imagination run wild.

For designers, the announcement with guidelines for how to submit a stylesheet will come when the core in HTML has been finalized. [personal profile] nova has written us some notes on Visual Design for Styles. [personal profile] branchandroot and [personal profile] dani_the_girl have been working hard to make a few last patches, ensure that every class is in the right spot, and have also been making an optional base stylesheet with common design choices, like making interaction links display as a horizontal list.

In the meantime, we need to rename the default style and want everyone's ideas, so please comment on this post with what you think would be a good name for our base style. Our internal name for it has been "Core 2 Testing", but we want something that highlights that this is the style that is easy to have wildly different stylesheets. On Saturday, April 25th, 2009 (time/zone to be determined) we'll collect all the ideas and put them to a vote. OpenID users, we want your participation too, so make sure you comment!

Please continue to make bug reports on the related posts, just so we can keep a good visual eye on what's going on: Transmogrified, Negatives, core2, and Zesty. If you're interested, there's also a call for Documentation volunteers.

I think it should be called "Tabula Rassa".

I like this (I think it's Tabula Rasa, though, unless the extra s means something I'm not familiar with).

[personal profile] rho 2009-04-20 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, the extra s only means that I can't spell. :)

Memetic Mutations.

+1 for:

Multifarious
Dreamscapes
Proteus
Canvas
Cascade

OT: The CSS Zen Garden link reminded me of the old Zen Garden S2 layout. I always wished that could have been fixed up a little more, have the stylesheets be changeable from the options page, stuff like that. I imagine journal CSS designers would find it handy for demos and experimenting and such. Dunno if anything similar is in the works here, but it'd be nifty if it was.

As someone who loves making themes, but not yet up to coding layers. I am thrilled with this news. Many thanks to the team who've worked so hard to make this happen. *hugs you all*

You asked, so I'm commenting. :) I really like the name Dreamscapes, because I think it ties in well with Dreamwidth, and I think it perfectly describes the multitude of stylesheets that can be used (dream landscapes that can be laid out in any way imaginable).

Another suggestion to go along with the dream theme - how about Dreamcatcher or Dreamcatching?

I really like “Tabula Rasa.” Something like “Stylish” or “Dream Garden” might work, too.

"Dreamscapes" sounds good.

How about Crepuscular? Sunrise and sunset are both beginnings and endings. It's a very full-of-potential word. Also, geeky and obscure. Amd kind of pretty.

I don't like Tabula rasa because it sort of implies that there is nothing there.

Dreamscapes is nice but what I'd really like is something that ties into the outer space theme of us being on Betelgeuse and Alpha Centauri. Something that says "Beam me up Scotty!". No idea what though.

My suggestion is Dreamspace. I like the idea people have suggested of sticking with the "dream" wording and Dreamspace give me the impression of vastness, of possibilities and of exploration.

Kind of like Dreamwidth.

My votes go to Dreamscapes, Caesar (for the pun), and Battle Royale (because one of my favorite movies ever is Accepted, and Gene is one of my favorite characters ever in anything).

I specifically vote against Tabula Rasa because of poor past experience with a LiveJournal fandom RPG of the same name which also banked on the concept.

Besides... I'm under the impression that the default style is not going to be completely white or boring; that it is not, in fact, going to be a blank slate, but rather something that is customized with the ease of, for instance, breathing. That is, there is something there, to start.
