"Name our Style" challenge and pre-announcement about submitting stylesheets
There were lots of reasons why we worked on overhauling core, some of which I wrote about in my last entry. One of the things that I'm really excited about is that core2 is designed to be completely customizable with CSS. There are classes and IDs for a multitude of options, from making alternating entries different colours, to putting different borders around protected entries. We're still working on documentation, and there's a little bit of finalizing to the HTML that's left, but shortly there will be an announcement with information about how to write and submit your own CSS to be offered as an official stylesheet. We have seen some of the things that members have been producing with the core2 drafts, and we're really excited to see what the community does with the finalized version. Anyone who is familiar with the css Zen Garden knows how much this kind of design can free you to let your imagination run wild.
For designers, the announcement with guidelines for how to submit a stylesheet will come when the core in HTML has been finalized.
nova has written us some notes on Visual Design for Styles.
branchandroot and
dani_the_girl have been working hard to make a few last patches, ensure that every class is in the right spot, and have also been making an optional base stylesheet with common design choices, like making interaction links display as a horizontal list.
In the meantime, we need to rename the default style and want everyone's ideas, so please comment on this post with what you think would be a good name for our base style. Our internal name for it has been "Core 2 Testing", but we want something that highlights that this is the style that is easy to have wildly different stylesheets. On Saturday, April 25th, 2009 (time/zone to be determined) we'll collect all the ideas and put them to a vote. OpenID users, we want your participation too, so make sure you comment!
Please continue to make bug reports on the related posts, just so we can keep a good visual eye on what's going on: Transmogrified, Negatives, core2, and Zesty. If you're interested, there's also a call for Documentation volunteers.
